Mid Ohio

Driver Education

Mid-Ohio Region DE and Instructor Natlional Training at Putnam Park

Mid-Ohio Region is hosting its annual driver’s education event at Putnam Park Road Course in Mt. Meridian, Indiana. Putnam Park was built in 1991 and the Mid-Ohio Region PCA was one of the first groups to utilize this excellent circuit for high performance driver’s education. The track is a 1.8-mile long, ten-turn road course with an excellent layout. The entire circuit can be seen from the pit area. It is a favorite of professional racing teams doing their testing and of club racers alike. Because the track is relatively flat, has high visibility, plenty of run off room, it makes for a terrific place to begin your high performance driving experience. Putnam Park is great for experienced drivers as well and offers positive and negative camber corners, several high-speed corners, and a downhill main straight. Putnam Park is an easy drive, 40 miles west of Indianapolis, IN, just off I-70 near Cloverdale. This event has proven to be great for driving, as well as socializing with other drivers and instructors. This year we are offering a three-day event. Friday, July 10, will be a solo event for A and B group drivers by invitation only. Saturday and Sunday will include A, B, C, and D groups. There will be a PCA instructor certification school on Friday, July 10 (contact: Frank Todaro at 614-620-9288 or frank@todarolaw.com for instructor certification info). Registration for instructor training opens May 11, 2009. Instructors interested in attending the National training class must fill out a pre-approval form, which can be downloaded from www.morpca.org or by contacting Frank. All DE student drivers will have an instructor riding with them on-track until the driver is comfortable with the course and their car. Usually, Group A does not require instructors, but they are available. There will be four run groups to better match students of similar abilities in the same session. Instructors will have their own run group. Run Group A will be for very experienced drivers in higher performance cars. Group B will be for experienced drivers new to Putnam Park or driving medium performance cars. Group C will be for drivers with some experience, and Group D will be for drivers with little or no experience. There will also be scheduled classroom sessions to discuss several aspects of high performance driving with plenty of time for questions and answers. This is an excellent time to learn more about your car and enhance your driving skills. Also, new for this year will be a “Taste Of The Track” for those who have not yet participated in a driver’s education. These individuals will gain exposure through observing tech inspections, attending classroom sessions, and riding with our instructors on the track. The organizers will also provide touring laps during the lunch breaks each day. Please visit our web site for the details. Student online registration at: http://www.clubregistration.net/ starting May 1, 2009. If you have any questions about the event, please contact: David Hayden, event chairperson at (740) 745-2034 or email at davidehayden@windstream.net, Marsha Hayden, event registrar at (740) 745-2034 or email at putnamparkregistrar@windstream.net. Arthritis Foundation Car Show

Plan to return to Dublin’s Metro Center as the Central Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation invites Porsche drivers to join them for the 27th Annual Classic Auto Show & Cruise-In. This is central Ohio’s premier car-related event – attracting more than two thousand display vehicles each year. This unique Dublin setting is perfect for a car show – with Porsche having Saturday’s prime parking area in the grass, under the trees by the pond. The Arthritis Foundation Show is being promoted as a multi-region Porsche Club of America event and thus we hope to have numerous entries from surrounding Regions. This event generates more than $50,000 to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. The celebration kicks off on Friday, July 10th with a Cruise-In, which has become the largest event of its kind in Ohio. More than 1,200 street rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, European exotics and other cruisers from the 1920s to the present will make their appearance. 26-years of tradition will continue with a presentation of over 100 awesome 6-foot-high trophies to the Top Cruise-In cars. A huge variety of terrific food will be available at the concession stands, so plan to come early and spend the entire day with your family and friends, enjoying a live Mike Albert concert featuring the Memories of Elvis in the evening! On Saturday, July 11th, you’ll have a full day at the exciting Classic Auto, with more than 45 judged classes of automobiles on display, special Show-Within-A-Show groups and several regional events taking place. Rock ‘N’ Roll Oldies will spin all day long, followed by a fantastic live concert by Phil Dirt & The Dozers in the evening, including a dance floor in front of the stage! On Saturday the gates open at 7:30 AM. The judging for the Porsche Show-Within-A-Show will begin at 11:00 AM. Judging rules will be the same as in the past few years. We will have a total of eight Porsche classes (listed on the registration form). Keeping this the ‘user-friendly’ event it has been; engine compartments, undercarriages, and wheel wells will not be judged. Originality is also not considered in the scoring. If you wash your car and vacuum the interior, you’re ready to enter! Contact Milton Scott at 937.335.9700 or Andy Trux at andrewtrux@cs.com for further information. Visit www.arthritisautoshow.com to see some great pictures of past years’ Arthritis Foundation Car Shows. Also, see Mid-Ohio Region’s web site at www.morpca.org for additional information.

Rally

Summer Rally

Summer is here and it is time to take the Porsche out on some open roads! Ah, but you say it takes hours of driving from Atlanta to find quiet roads. Not so, and if you join us for the August 2nd Summer Rally you can enjoy quiet roads and end up at a great party with fellow Porsche enthusiasts. If you have never rallied before, come on out and find out what rallying is all about. A Porsche club rally takes place on public roads where instructions are given to get you around the rally course and of course end up at the party. All one needs to be able to do is read the odometer and speedometer, and you will get around the course while enjoying quiet roads in your Porsche (or any other car if the Porsche is not available). The rally will be out past the airport in the southwest part of the Atlanta area and will start by a shopping center but quickly go to some very quiet roads, some, so quiet, you might think you are driving in south Georgia between Valdosta and Way Cross. Again, the rally will be August 2nd with registration opening at 1 PM. Please be at registration by 1:30 since the first car out will be leaving at 2 PM. The cost of the rally is ten dollars per car. To get to the rally start take I-85 south past the airport OR I-285 south on the west side of town continuing south past I-20 about 8-9 miles. In either case EXIT onto South Fulton Parkway. Remain on South Fulton Parkway for 7-9 miles and then turn right on Hwy 92 (Campbellton Fairburn Rd). There is a traffic light at this intersection. After turning on Hwy 92, there will be a Publix shopping center immediately on the right. Continue to the far end of the shopping center and take the last entry into the shopping center alongside the McDonalds. Take the very first left at the "PCA" sign and this is the location of registration. Please bring a clipboard, watch, and your favorite beverages for celebrating at the end of the rally. The rally will end at Suzanne and Bob Minarcine's house where snacks will be provided. If you have any questions, please call at 678-423-1989. We hope to see you August 2nd!

Mix friendly people and our Saturday evening German Beverage and Bratwurst dinner and this is how to end a season! Got an Audi, BMW, Porsche or Mercedes? Bring it, it's Oktoberfest!

Fall Carerra Classic

PCA driving schools (PCA DE) offer the perfect environment for car lovers 18 years of age and older to learn more about performance driving. Experienced instructors are paired with students of all levels to help them safely learn vehicle dynamics and high performance driving skills in a safe, controlled setting. If you have always wanted to learn more about driving technique, joining a DE event is the safest, single best way to learn. While the event is held at a race track, it is NOT a racing school. You will not be taught to race. What you will learn about vehicle dynamics and high performance driving will carry over to street driving and make you much more aware and capable in an emergency situation on the street. The High Perfomence Driving Experience and Charity Laps are also part of the DE Weekend.
