SHELL PCA Zone Challenge

Are you looking for some friendly, team-oriented competition? Each of the 13 PCA Zones, the Executive Council, and our Sponsors, have been asked to field teams to compete in a Parade triathlon that is sure to entertain spectators and participants. Entrants, co-entrants and family members are encouraged to sign up for the Pit Stop Challenge, Porsche Pull, or Porsche Pusher Autocross. To engage the spectators, each Zone may provide its own “Spirit Squad” with uniforms, cheerleaders, signage, and assorted hoopla. Awards will be given for individual wins, as well as for the best zone participation, uniforms, cheerleaders and enthusiasm. A perpetual trophy will be awarded to the zone with the best aggregate performance on all three Zone Challenge events. Rules and sign up information will be forwarded to the Zone Reps to organize their teams for Parade week.

The Pit Stop Challenge will occur on Monday afternoon, August 7, at the site of the Concours d'Elegance. The Porsche Pull will take place on Tuesday afternoon, August 8, after the rally at the Red Lion parking lot. The Porsche Push Autocross will be Friday afternoon, August 11, also at the Red Lion parking lot. Here is a summary of how each event will occur:

Pit Stop Challenge – This event will pit two teams at a time as they change the tires on two similar Porsches. Both cars will be elevated so that all 4 wheels are off the ground. Each team will consist of 7 crewmembers--one "driver," 4 tire changers and 2 torque wrench operators. The object is to loosen the lug nuts, remove the wheels and tires, switch them from one corner of the car to the opposite corner, tighten the lug nuts, and torque them down. At the start, both teams will run to their cars. The driver will get in and step on the brake. The tire changers will remove the wheels and replace them on the opposite corner of the car. The team is finished when the torque wrench operators finish torqueing the lug nuts and raise their wrenches in the air. Judges will verify that all nuts have been torqued. In each two-team contest, the winner will be the first one completed, and they will advance to the next round in the bracket. The winner of the final pairing will be the champion.

Porsche Pull – This event is patterned after the vehicle pulls you might have seen in "strong man" competitions, and the object is to pull a Porsche a specified distance. Each team will be comprised as follows: Six pullers (three male, three female), a licensed PCA member driver/brakeman, and a passenger. (The passenger can be a family member less than sixteen years old of a Parade registrant.) The occupants of the car must be seated and belted in. At the start whistle, pullers will pick up the rope and pull the car towards the finish line. Time starts on whistle and finishes when the front wheel crosses the finish line. There's a one-second penalty for each cone knocked down or out of its chalklined box. The four top times will advance to the semifinals for run-offs, with the best time facing the fourth-best and the second-best facing the third-best, and the winners of the semifinals facing off for the championship. Car engines (if present) are not running, and no pushing of the car is allowed. If space and equipment allow, two parallel courses will be set up.

Porsche Pusher Autocross – In this event, teams will push a Porsche through a simple autocross course. Each zone will field a team of four participants. Each team will consist of two pushers, a driver (licensed PCA member) and a passenger (a family member, e.g., a spouse or a child age 12 or above). The two occupants of the pushed car must be seated and belted in. The team from a zone will push the car around the course to the finish. The run will consist of the time for the driver and passenger to enter and belt in and for the pushers to push the car around the course to the finish, near the start line. Pushers must push on either the rear fenders or the bumper. No pushing on window glass, rear deck lid, or roof. There will be two identical courses, and they will be roughly the shape of a U. The courses will be set up to take less than two minutes from start to finish. Any cones moved from their chalklined boxes will incur a one-second penalty. The competition will be head to head with the first team to cross the finish line moving on to the next round. Teams will also be timed and in the event of an apparent tie, stopwatch time will determine the winner. If there is still a tie, teams will switch courses and rerun the event. Each team will have one push with the winner moving on to the next round until we determine the champion. If there are an unequal number of teams, some teams will get a bye in the first round, as determined by a draw. However all teams will have to push in each round so that everyone has chance to expend an equal amount of energy. Teams will be allowed up to two alternates, and can swap team members as often as they like during the event.
