YOKOHAMA TSD Rally & YOKOHAMA Gimmick Rally

July 21, 2006:
Note from Rik Larson
The Yokohama TSD Rally will have a Supplementary General Instructions (SGI) page issued at registration, but here are a couple of heads up items:
  1. Several items in the TSD Rally General Instructions are being deleted.  They are:
    • delete  F.5 --- MANNED ROUTE CONTROL
    • delete F.6 ---  MANNED ROUTE CONTROL PROCEDURE
    • delete L.3 --- NOTE INSTRUCTION EXECUTION
  2. The following items in the PCR Rally Glossary, will not be used on this event:
    • RIP
    • ITIS
  3. The START (Section D.2 of the TSD Rally General Instructions) will not be at the hotel. Replacement instructions will be provided at the Rally Registration table when you register.
  4. If you are running the Gimmick and TSD rallies, then you will have an early start time so that you can complete both events in a timely manner and make it back to the hotel for the Zone Challenge.

General Rally Information

This year’s TSD Rally will be on Tuesday August 8th. The Rally takes place in the beautiful Columbia Gorge area. The TSD rally will include a gimmick rally on some of the most scenic roads to be found anywhere. The gimmick rally will be of interest to novice rally participants, to people are curious about rallying, and to those that are just looking for a fun drive. This event offers a catered lunch in a special location. The rally will take participants through some of the best scenery to be found anywhere.  We will quickly leave the Portland metropolitan area, heading into the Columbia River Gorge and the Cascade mountains.

The format is designed to appeal to everyone. We’re calling it a Chameleon Rally. It will feature a traditional TSD Rally as well as a Gimmick Rally, run simultaneously. If you’re running the Gimmick Rally, just follow the instructions. If you’re running the TSD Rally, you will take two deviations from the Gimmick Rally route that will take you to the TSD sections. If you’re running both of them, get a good night’s sleep the night before! If you just want to do a scenic tour, just follow the Gimmick Rally route and skip the gimmicks. Either way, be sure to bring a camera! All participants will make the same stop during a two hour lunch window, and enjoy a very nice lunch provided by Yokohama as part of the rally.  Also note: Gimmick Rally can be run in any car, even rental cars.

Only the Parade Portland entrant who is bringing the rally Porsche should register for the rally.  If you are driving or navigating another Parade entrant’s Porsche, the other entrant must register for the rally and include your name and Porsche entrant number on their rally registration.  Junior Participation Program (JPP) members may not drive in the Rally but may navigate with either of their parents driving.  College Age Family Program (CAFP) members may both drive or navigate in the rally.  See PCRs for further information.  For TSD Rally, the vehicle must be the Registered Porsche (or the second Porsche identified as non-Parade Registered Porsche, if the Registered Porsche is not street-legal). For the Gimmick Rally, any vehicle is allowed, subject to a special technical inspection.

YOKOHAMA Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Rally

The Parade Portland TSD rally will take you in some of the footsteps of the Lewis & Clark Expedition (1805-1806) through the beautiful Columbia River Gorge and many of its historical sites. Maybe even catch a glimpse or two of some wind surfers.

The event will take approximately TWO hours to finish after completing the odometer check. The course has been designed such that every entrant will enjoy the competition regardless of how much rally experience you might have. It will be easy to locate ALL of the checkpoints and you will still be speaking to your teammate at the hosted lunch at the finish. While eating lunch, you can compute your score, if you like, and turn in your scoring envelope to the scoring crew. If you are also competing in the gimmick rally, you can pickup that route and continue to its finish location. If not competing in the gimmick rally, you can explore the area and enjoy a leisurely drive back to the hotel and take in the Zone Challenge contest. Be advised, if you choose to do both the Gimmick Rally and the TSD, we estimate it will take a total of SEVEN HOURS to complete both.

If this is your first Rally, congratulations! The concept is a simple one: you will be given a set of instructions at the start telling you where to turn and the speed to drive. You will periodically encounter a “Checkpoint” where you will be timed to see how close you came to arriving at the official time, the more you are early or late, the more points you will score. Lowest score wins. You are given an out time and off you go to find the next checkpoint. Each Checkpoint starts with 0 points so you are starting fresh each time you leave a Checkpoint.

The rules and definitions for the terms used in and execution of the route instructions are in the general instructions and the Rally Glossary (Appendix VII of the PCRs). It is very important to read and understand these “Generals”. The General Instructions are posted; see the navigation bar on the left.

The awards banquet for the Yokohama TSD rally, Gimmick Rally, and Autocross will be on Thursday evening. It will be held at the OMSI. Check the official Parade Schedule for the time.

And check back here frequently for some Rally Tips.

YOKOHAMA Gimmick Rally

Event Information
The 2006 Gimmick Rally will be held in conjunction with the TSD Rally. You will choose your out times and out group  at registration and receive directions to the Rally starting area at Jantzen Beach Super Center. This Rally is not timed. There is no time limit, but all answer sheets must be turned in by 4 pm at  the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. Mileage will not be counted for score. You may stop anywhere along the way or detour as you please. The instruction will be user friendly and designed to provide you with a pleasant and safe trip. If you wish to ignore the gimmick questions and use the route instructions as a tour you are more than welcome to do so. Please note that due to the large number of cars entered, participation in both rallies could make for a long day. It is estimated you will need 7 hours to complete both the Gimmick Rally and the TSD Rally.

The Location
The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. It is 80 miles long and over 4000 feet deep with the north canyon walls in Washington and the south canyon walls in Oregon.

Through the millennia of geologic events, waterfalls have found a home in the Gorge. Any visit to the area would not be complete without a visit to its breath taking waterfalls. The most prominent Multnomah Falls, is the second highest year round waterfall in the United Statesand the most visited tourist attraction in Oregon.

For over 30,000 years the Columbia Gorge has supported flourishing Civilizations. Evidence of the Folsom and Marmes people, who crossed the great continental divide from Asia, were found in archaeological digs along the river. One dig at five mile rapids near The Dalles shows Native Americans have fished for salmon here for over 10,000 years.

While the once wild river has been tamed by dams over the past half century, the scenic beauty of the Columbia River Gorge lives on. Traditional Indian fishing methods have been replaced by modern techniques; modern highways course its path. You, however, will view the gorge from less traveled byways.

Here are the things that you can do NOW to prepare for the Rallys:

  1. Select the TSD Rally Class that you will compete in (PCR Section R-2).
    1. Pay attention to the equipment allowed for TSD, especially the navigational/GPS systems.
    2. The Yokohama TSD Rally must be run in a Porsche vehicle.
  2. Print off a copy of the Rally Glossary (Appendix VII of the PCR) for reference for TSD.
  3. Review the PCR Rally Section R-8.1.2 for the new DIYC checkpoint procedure for TSD.
  4. Have a watch (digital is best) that reads hours, minutes, and seconds that you can set to the official time. An inexpensive ($11) digital kitchen timer/clock (like at Target) works great….big readout and easily set for TSD.
  5. Gather your equipment items: pencils/pens, timepiece, clipboard, paper, etc.
  6. Run a TSD event in your region or zone; other local club or SCCA.
  7. Check back here in April for the General Instructions that you can download/print.
  8. Check this page frequently for any additional rally tips that will be posted.

What to do when you pass thru the registration process in August at the rally table:

  1. Verify your vehicle type, car number, and rally class.
  2. Pick your out time and out group for the Gimmick Rally entrants from the time groupings available.
  3. Pick up any supplemental instructions sheet.
  4. Pick up thedirections to the Rally start location for Tuesday morning.
  5. Make note of the two TSD rally schools that will be available on Monday afternoon. Check the Parade Schedule for times and room location. We have a crew of highly experienced rally instructors and I guarantee you will learn a lot.
  6. Make sure that your Porsche TSD and Gimmick rally vehicle has passed the safety/tech inspection. There will not be any safety inspection service available on Tuesday at the rally start. Cars without this will not be allowed to run either Rally.
  7. Make sure that you have plenty of gas in the vehicle. There will be a rest stop midway thru the TSD rally and several on the Gimmick rally.

What to do on Tuesday morning:

  1. You must have the tech/safety sheet and sticker on the Porsche or other Gimmick Rally vehicle being used.
  2. Both driver and navigator must be wearing their name badges.
  3. Make sure that your timepiece is set to the official time for TSD
  4. At your designated time, check in and pickup your route instructions and any supplemental instructions.
  5. Make sure that your route instructions are complete (all pages are present).
Be sure to pick up two bottles of water per car at Rally check in.

You will not see this on the Parade Rally!
